A unit converter for everyday sums: metres to feet, kilos to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit, litres to gallons, km/h to mph, gigabytes to gibibytes, hours to minutes. It also covers the units we actually use in Pakistan and that most converters skip: marla and kanal for land, tola for gold, and seer and maund for grain and produce.

Type a number on either side and the other side updates. Below that, a table shows the same value in every unit of that type.

How to use

  1. Pick a type at the top: Length, Weight, Temperature, Area, Volume, Speed, Data or Time.
  2. For Area, choose the Marla size that matches your property (more on this below).
  3. Type a number in From and choose its unit. The To box fills in. You can also type in the To box and the conversion runs the other way.
  4. Press the swap button to flip the units.
  5. Scroll down to see the value in every unit.

Marla and kanal: which size is right?

This is the part that confuses people, and with good reason. A marla isn't one fixed size in practice.

  • 272.25 sq ft is the traditional revenue measure used in land records. It comes from a square of 16.5 by 16.5 feet.
  • 225 sq ft is what most housing societies in Lahore and much of Punjab use when they sell a "5 marla" or "10 marla" plot.
  • 250 sq ft shows up in some other cities and schemes.

A kanal is always 20 marla, so it changes with the marla. With 225 sq ft marla, a kanal is 4,500 sq ft. With 272.25 sq ft marla, it's 5,445 sq ft. On a 1 kanal plot, that's a difference of 945 sq ft, which is a lot of money.

Before you compare plot prices or sign anything, ask the society or check the documents for the size they use. The acre stays fixed at 43,560 sq ft regardless, which is why "8 kanal = 1 acre" only holds with the 272.25 sq ft marla.

Tola, seer and maund

A tola is 11.6638 grams, the standard used for gold in Pakistan and India. Jewellers quote gold rates per tola and per 10 grams, so this converter helps you compare the two. 1 tola is a little more than 11.66 grams, so 10 grams is about 0.857 tola.

For seer and maund, this tool uses the Pakistani metric standard: 1 maund = 40 kg, and 1 seer = 1 kg. That is how wheat and other crops are traded today. Historically the maund varied by region and era, and older British era measures were a bit lighter, so be careful when reading very old records.

Getting exact answers

Conversions use exact international definitions: an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, a US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. Results are rounded to hide floating point noise, so you see 0.3, not 0.30000000000000004.

Temperature works differently from the rest because the scales don't start at the same zero. To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So 37 °C is 37 × 1.8 + 32 = 98.6 °F. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15.

For data, there are two systems. KB, MB and GB use powers of 1000, which is how storage is sold. KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1024, which is what Windows shows (while calling them GB). That's why a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GB on a Windows PC.
